The difficulty is just hard enough to pose a challenge without ever being frustrating, and the exploration is out of this world with the series’ smartest secrets hidden around the game’s world. Not to mention that Samus’ controls are at their best, with every action flowing in and out of each other. The minimalist soundtrack is elevated by the game’s color palette, creating a truly alien environment.

Other games in the series have added their own quirks to the formula, but none have managed to touch the precedent Super Metroid set. It takes everything that made the original Metroid work so well and perfects it. Super Metroid is 2D sidescrolling at its finest. Charging through levels massacring everything in sight, is not only graceful but also immensely satisfying. The counter system is a tad over-used by the game's end, but it certainly gives Samus Returns a sense of momentum.

Mercury Stream worked wonders on the combat and maneuverability too, with Samus Returns being the slickest the bounty hunter has ever felt. Delving deep into the depths of SR388 is a treat thanks to a mixture of expected themes and brand-spanking-new Chozo architecture. Bringing the core concepts of the Gameboy original to bear, then injecting all manner of modern tweaks and changes, Samus Returns feels a step in the right direction for 2D Metroid.ĭespite being on a handheld once again, Samus Returns is a heft game with a giant, interconnected world. Samus Returns is Nintendo's big remake, and it's quite the return to form. Metroid 2: Return of Samus, despite being aged beyond the modern gamer's tolerance for nonsense, is clearly one that Nintendo (and fans) see potential in. Whilst not first-party dabbling like classic Super, or Second-party ventures like Prime, Mercury Stream has come out swinging, breathing new life into the venerable franchise. Updated October 12, 2021, by Adam Carr: Seemingly against all odds, Metroid has escaped its second decade-or-so hiatus and has come back strong with two of the best entries the series has ever produced. Related: Metroid: Most Devastating Game Over Screens It all started with a simple sidescroller in 1986, and it’ll presumably keep going on so long as Nintendo and fans care, but is caring enough to make a good game? Regardless, Metroid has had a rich history filled with some of the best video games ever made but also some of the worst. It just doesn’t pull in the numbers these other big hitters do. Despite being well-liked and selling well, it’s always been a bit ignored in favor of The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon. Nintendo and Metroid have had a rocky relationship, to say the least. AM2R was lauded as a fantastic addition to the series, but its fan-made status made Nintendo order a takedown leading to a great deal of outcry from the video game community. Its last main entry was Metroid Prime: Federation Force which, quite sadly, didn’t manage to be the revival fans were hoping for. It’s one of Nintendo's staple franchises, holding a solid three-decade legacy, yet it hasn’t gotten much love in recent years.
